Earlier this year, the automaker introduced its five-door Ibiza hatchback and provided strong hints at what it would look like in two-door form with its aggressive Bocanegra concept in Geneva. Like its more economical variant, the Cupra is built upon VW's latest PQ25 small-car platform. The new architecture will also underpin the forthcoming Polo and Audi A1 later next year. Design of the car was undertaken by former Lamborghini design chief Luc Donkerwolke. His edgy and contemporary styling was first seen on the outgoing Lamborghini Gallardo, but most recently his clean-cut language makes its way onto the small performance car. Compared with the regular Ibiza, the Cupra's exterior boasts a more sloping roof, smaller side windows out back, a reduced hatch size, and bolder rear shoulders over the rear wheels.
Powering the Cupra is a 180-hp version of VW's 1.4L Twincharger supercharged four-cylinder mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. Through the use of direct-injection, the 1.4L unit is said to consume less gasoline and emit little emissions while providing a generous amount of power. In true Cupra fashion, Seat engineers implemented their "Agile Chassis" handling systems that include ESP, ABS, and TCS. Standard features on the Cupra include Hill Hold Control, TPMS, chrome headlight housings, foglamps, Cupra specific suspension, sport seats, and aluminum pedals.
